Committed to a certain style kitchen can be a big decision for some. This is not just an expression of your personal style is also a reflection of the overall architecture and design of your home. So, when you begin the process of choosing the style of your kitchen, make sure it fits in seamlessly with the existing environment. In other words – an old-world kitchen Tuscan style will stick out like a sore thumb at the home of contemporary lean and efficient.
Because the kitchen is the center of all activities and tend to relate from one room to another it is very important to consider how kitchen materials, details, forms and styles associated cabinet and the transition from one room to the next.
Smaller kitchen spaces tend to call the clean lines and less detail and ornament in the style of design – where a larger kitchen area can certainly tolerate a wider more detail.
I always advise my clients to research all kitchen design magazines – and offline – and to focus on a particular style of kitchen cabinets, counter tops, backsplash material, flooring and appliances that really speaks to you. Create an inspiration file will serve as a starting point – in fact, you’ll begin to see your design style began to emerge.
So how do you know which style best suits the style of the kitchen of your house?
Consider these guidelines when doing your research.
Colonial Style Home:
* Shaker, country or traditional style cabinets – maple stained or painted wood kitchen cabinets in green, blue, cream or gray.
* Keep the design simple and avoid heavy cabinets decorated ornaments.
* Wood floors, and fireplaces are characteristic of Colonial design.
* Tables of natural materials such as Soapstone, limestone (solid) and a block of meat will lend some authenticity to the kitchen.
* Tile backsplash is simple with no pattern.
